About The Money Maze

The Money Maze is where South African retail investors come to make sense of the stock market without needing a translator, a finance degree, or a strong drink. Twice a week, we unpack the jargon, decode JSE company results, and poke fun at the economic soap operas we call market news.

We cover the good, the bad, and the “why is this even listed?” from P/E ratios and dividend yields to ETF strategies and the real reason your favourite stock tanked on Monday. We keep it real, we keep it local, and we keep it just cheeky enough to make finance worth listening to.

And yes, for the lawyers: This is not financial advice. It’s information, education, and the occasional roast of your favourite blue-chip. Do your own research, speak to a licensed advisor, or blame Eskom, whichever works for you.

About me

I’m Jay, part market nerd, part storyteller, full-time fan of making complicated things simple. I’ve spent over two decades working in oil, mining, and construction across more countries than most people have stamps in their passports. That means I’ve seen markets boom, bust, and behave like a toddler on a sugar high.

I started The Money Maze because I got tired of seeing everyday South Africans shut out of investing by jargon, gatekeeping, and “gurus” who make it sound harder than it is.

My goal? To explain the stock market in plain English, with enough South African flavour to make it relatable and enough humour to keep you awake.

I’m not here to tell you what to buy. I’m here to give you the tools, context, and confidence to make your own calls, and maybe share a laugh or two along the way.

The JSE stories worth knowing about, explained like a mate would at the braai. No hot tips, no spam.
